We took a public bus to the train station in Chuisi, which will be the main way out of the town should we go on another excursion or travel around during a free day/weekend. It was about an hour and a half to get from Montepulciano to Orvieto - an hour by bus to Chuisi and 30 min to Orvieto Station by train - but it seemed much shorter than it actually was. upon arrival, after a short gondola like ride, we were a few blocks away from the main town and the beautiful Duomo di Orvieto. First started in the late 13th century, the cathedral took over 300 years to finish construction to house an alleged miracle of the blessed Host bleeding onto the alter cloth after a priest's doubts about the Catholic belief of Transubstantiation. The inside of the cathedral were amazing as well. There were paintings of biblical events on the walls and the dome above the alter that were amazingly done.
Next in Orvieto, we went to a public cave system that runs underneath a small portion of the city. Our guide told us that the first caves were made by the Etruscans and then reused by the citizens of Orvieto as storage, queries, olive presses, pigeon farms, livestock housing, and even bomb shelter during WWII. The caves were very cool temperature wise, which was a relief from the blazing hot sun. We did not stay long in Orvieto so we only had a few hours to walk the city and get lunch.
